REWU Commends GIZ Rwanda for Advancing Safer and Greener Mining Practices

Kigali, Rwanda — The Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU) has expressed its strong appreciation for GIZ Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to transform the mining sector through focused skills development and sustainable practices. The “Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector in Rwanda” project has so far provided essential training to over 400 miners across six satellite centres located in 6 mining companies, where training are currently ongoing

The initiative delivers specialized short-term courses directly at centres of COMIKAGI (in Gakenke), RETC (in Rutsiro), DEMICO (in Kamonyi), GAMICO( in Nyarugenge), Trinity Metals RUTONGO (in Rulindo), and Trinity Metals MUSHA (in Rwamagana)

These training courses encompass critical areas such as occupational safety, environmental compliance, drilling, blasting, and mineral processing designed in line with international standards and industry needs.

A Major Step Forward for Rwanda’s Mining Industry

Eng. Mutsindashyaka Andre, Secretary General of REWU, lauded the continuous professional development being offered. “We commend GIZ Rwanda for their unwavering contribution in enhancing the skills and safety standards of our miners. These ongoing trainings are vital for making our mining practices safer, greener, and more efficient,” he said.

He further emphasized, “By empowering our workforce with knowledge and practical skills, we are laying the foundation for a more sustainable and competitive mining sector that benefits workers, communities, businesses owners Rwanda’s economic growth.”

REWU recognizes that this ongoing training is critical for building a resilient, environmentally responsible mining industry. The union believes that such collaborative efforts are instrumental in promoting responsible mining that meets both local and international standards, production increment as well as increment of workers’ income.

“GIZ Rwanda’s ongoing contribution exemplifies their commitment to responsible resource management and sustainable development,” said Eng. Mutsindashyaka. “We look forward to seeing the continued impact of these trainings as miners apply new skills, ensuring safer operations and a healthier environment in Rwanda.”
