On August 16, 2025, a nationwide football tournament was launched, bringing together mining companies operating in Rwanda. The event kicked off with Big Mining FC, representing Big Mining Company Ltd in Ruhango, defeating ETS Kalinda 2-0 in their opening match.
The competition is held simultaneously across various districts of Rwanda, with the launch ceremony taking place in Byimana Sector, Ruhango District—home to Big Mining Company, which previously clinched the trophy.
Organizers explained that the primary goal is to support individuals engaged in mining, offering them an opportunity to socialize, foster camaraderie, and celebrate their achievements beyond their work in the mines.

Eng. Andre Mutsindashyaka, the Secretary General of the Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union commended the initiative, stating, “The establishment of this competition is a great way to further support those working in the mining industry. It emphasizes that their role isn’t just about mining but also about building community through sports and social interactions.”
He added that after each match, there are discussions on current government programs, enabling miners to share challenges and ideas, and report unresolved issues to relevant authorities for solutions.
Reflecting on the tournament’s history, Eng. Mutsindashyaka said it was first launched in 2023 but faced interruptions in 2024. It has now resumed in 2025, and he called upon players and team managers to uphold a spirit of professionalism and sportsmanship. The competition is expected to culminate in a final match on December 4, 2025, during International Mining Day, with a trophy awarded to the winning team.

Mr. Thomas Hubakimana, Managing Director of Big Mining Company and representative of Big Mining FC, expressed gratitude to the Rwandan government for organizing such events through the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) and Trade unions, which help foster teamwork and exchange of ideas.
He stated, “We recently won the cup, and with this victory, we are even more motivated as we aim to bring the trophy home again this year. Our company employs over 500 staff, all of whom are well-supported financially and socially. We encourage our players to give their best and uphold the pride of our team.”
Similarly, Darius Kayiranga, alias SHUNI, Managing Director of ETS Kalinda, acknowledged the disappointment of the loss but reiterated their commitment to continue competing in the future. “We’re delighted to participate in this initiative, which shows that miners are not just involved in mining but also enjoy activities like football, a sport loved by many. Rwanda has abundant mineral resources, and I invite skeptics to visit Kamonyi and Ruhango to see the wealth of minerals firsthand,” he said.

Many employees, including Nyirandikubwimana Alivella, a miner with over 12 years of experience, praised their management for providing a supportive work environment. She remarked, “Big Mining gives us everything we need, including support to save and access loans. We are here today to show our solidarity with the team and gratitude for what they have achieved for us.”
