During the Rwanda Mining Week 2025 opened in Kigali on Tuesday, 2nd December, 2025, experts convened to discuss the impactful role of natural minerals in advancing the digital economy and fostering innovation in smart technology. This pivotal event highlighted how minerals can drive growth in sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), aerospace, and clean energy.

Yves Mujyambere, Chief Innovation Officer at QT Global Software Ltd, spoke passionately about the significance of minerals in modern technology. “Minerals are essential for producing batteries that power electric vehicles and are crucial in creating semiconductors used in AI workloads,” said Mujyambere. He emphasized the potential of Rwandan resources to contribute meaningfully to the global supply chain, suggesting that the country can produce not just raw materials but also refined components such as capacitors that are in high demand.

Prof. Wilfred Ndifon, President of the AIMS Research & Innovation Centre and Chief Scientific Officer of the AIMS Global Network, discussed how research institutions can support smart mining initiatives. “As we face the digital revolution, mathematics underpins the technologies driving economic advancement. We must build our capacity in modern technology to develop solutions that address our unique challenges,” he stated.

The panel also explored the innovative use of quantum sensing and data analytics to improve mineral exploration success rates. Recent advancements in these technologies promise to revolutionize the way minerals are located and extracted, enabling local industries to thrive where they previously struggled.

As the discussion continued, participants reiterated the importance of investing in education and research to harness local mineral wealth, thereby creating sustainable jobs and reducing reliance on imported materials.

The event concluded with a call to action for governments and the private sector to collaborate in leveraging Africa’s rich mineral resources. By integrating advanced technologies and refining raw materials locally, the continent can position itself as a leader in the burgeoning digital economy.
