On May 13, 2026, the Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU) marked another milestone in its ongoing mission to champion professionalization and workers’ rights within the nation’s mining sector. During a dedicated session from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Deputy General Secretary Bwanakweli Jean Marie Vianney, alongside West-South Regional Coordinator Daniel HAKUZWEYEZU, conducted an official visit to Big Mining Company Ltd in Ruhango District.
The visit featured a highly productive dialogue that brought together union leaders, company management, and more than 400 workers. The core agenda focused on strengthening mutual cooperation, raising awareness about labor laws, and improving workers’ welfare and overall working conditions. These discussions directly reflect REWU’s guiding philosophy to advocate for decent living conditions, robust workplace safety, and the fundamental respect of workers’ rights.
This recent engagement builds upon an already thriving partnership between REWU and the workforce at Big Mining Company Ltd. Earlier this year, on March 17, 2026, the union proudly highlighted these same workers in Ruhango as they celebrated their knowledge and certification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program, a key REWU initiative designed to promote decent work and validate skills.
The meeting concluded in a remarkably positive and constructive atmosphere, proving highly fruitful for both the employer and the employees. In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, all participating workers expressed their firm commitment to joining the union and agreed to contribute their membership dues.
Registration forms were successfully distributed on-site to the new members. By joining, these workers are stepping into a massive support network, adding their voices to the already happy members who trust REWU to help build and protect their dream careers in the mining industry. Solidarity forever.
