On June 25, 2025, the District of Karongi commemorated the Day of the African Child (DAC) with a vibrant celebration held in Rubengera Sector. This important day, observed annually to honor the rights and well-being of children across Africa, was marked this year with a variety of activities and community engagement.

Originally scheduled for June 16 each year, the event was postponed to June 25 due to ongoing national examination schedules that coincided with the traditional date.

The celebration was organized through a partnership involving Karongi District, World Vision Rwanda, and the REWU Union. Prior to the main festivities, children from Child Protection Clubs—established under collaboration between REWU and World Vision across schools and neighborhoods—participated in exciting competitions. The top-performing clubs in each sector received awards, with the overall best club at the district level being specially recognized.

A young representative of children expressed gratitude to World Vision, REWU, and the Rwandan government for their dedication to safeguarding children’s rights. He urged his peers to seize opportunities, work hard in school, and recognize that they are Rwanda’s future leaders.

Raymond Uwiryabye, Cluster Manager of World Vision and spokesperson for the partners, highlighted the strong collaboration between stakeholders in protecting children. He emphasized the importance of children—being aware of their rights, preventing abuse, and reporting any misconduct promptly. He also encouraged children to love their schools and support their families, especially during upcoming holidays.

The Vice Mayor of Karongi, responsible for economic development and the guest of honor, commended the ongoing cooperation among partners and reminded parents of their duties to provide for their children’s needs. He urged children to diligently pursue their education, emphasizing that their efforts today shape their future contributions to society.

Throughout the event, children showcased their talents through dance performances, drama, and poetry readings, all aligned with this year’s theme, “Respect and Kindness for Myself and Others.” Awards for excellent schools were also distributed, including the winner of the “Kagame Cup,” sponsored by World Vision.

The celebration was attended by various stakeholders, including World Vision, REWU, CLADHO, Caritas Rwanda, Bienfait Rwanda, Humanity & Inclusion, World Relief Rwanda, and Youth for Girls’ Rights. Over 1,300 children from different schools, 90 parents’ committees, local authorities from Rubengera, and around 70 community friends participated, making this event a successful and meaningful commemoration of the African Child’s Day.
