The PACT/ ITSCI (the International Tin Supply Chain Initiative) has organized a capacity building workshop for Mining cooperatives to comply with rules and regulations, so that they can meet national and international expectations to become competitive in the mineral market.
The workshop which took place on 26-27 October, 2021 in Karongi District was an opportunity to review different issues in the sector and find solutions for improvement.
According to the organizers, the main objectives of the workshop were to:
· Reinforce managerial skills for cooperatives;
· Train cooperatives on labor, mining, tax and environmental laws;
· Disseminate the importance of responsible mineral supply chain;
· Monitor the current compliance status with mining and labor laws as well as regulations, mining standards
The workshop brought together representatives from Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB), PACT/ITSCI, FECOMIRWA, APEDDH, REWU and RCA.
Opening the meeting, Mr. Byiringiro Alexis, Mining Inspector at Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board inspired cooperatives representatives to ensure that the standards developed by the Board are applied while mining.
PACT Rwanda Country Manager Mr. Ildephonse Niyonsaba reiterated that such workshops are in line with ITSCI objectives to bring together all the stakeholders in mining in order to have the same vision for the sector.
During the Workshop, REWU trade union General Secretary Eng. Mutsindashyaka André trained the participants on the mining worker’s rights on contracts, fair pay, improved working conditions, role of trade union in the company, among others…
