The Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU), in partnership with World Vision Rwanda (WVR), recently organized a crucial capacity development session focused on Child and Adult Safeguarding Behavior Protocols. This initiative underscores REWU and WVR’s joint commitment to fostering safe, rights-based, and dignified working and community environments, especially for children and vulnerable adults within program areas.

The primary goal of the session was to significantly strengthen REWU staff’s capacity, commitment, and compliance with these safeguarding protocols, thereby enhancing the effective implementation of the organization’s Child Protection Work Plan activities for the fiscal year 2025–2026.

Key objectives of the comprehensive training included:

  • Deepening Understanding: Enhancing staff comprehension of core child and adult safeguarding concepts, potential risks, and their personal responsibilities.
  • Policy Familiarization: Familiarizing staff with REWU’s specific safeguarding policies, codes of conduct, and behavior protocols.
  • Work Plan Focus: Providing both initial and refresher training on the activities detailed in REWU’s Child Protection Work Plan.
  • Skill Development: Strengthening practical skills required for the identification, prevention, reporting, and appropriate response to safeguarding and child protection concerns.
  • Clarity on Procedures: Clarifying reporting pathways, referral mechanisms, and internal whistleblowing procedures.
  • Culture of Accountability: Actively promoting a culture of accountability, ethical behavior, and maintaining a zero-tolerance stance against abuse, exploitation, and harassment.
  • Team Building: Utilizing a structured retreat environment to strengthen teamwork, staff well-being, and shared organizational values.
