Mubuga, Karongi District – March 5, 2026 – An intensive training session aimed at bolstering child protection efforts was successfully concluded on March 5, 2026, in the Mubuga sector of Karongi District. The training was organized by the Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU) in partnership with World Vision Rwanda, targeting youth committees tasked with safeguarding children’s rights.
These youth committees, comprised of representatives from the village, cell, and sector levels, are mandated to actively protect and ensure the safety of children in their communities. The training focused on equipping these young leaders with the necessary knowledge and skills to combat child abuse effectively.
Key modules covered during the session included strategies for preventing child abuse, the importance of timely reporting to relevant authorities when abuse is identified, and procedures for following up on abused children. The follow-up component emphasized ensuring victims receive comprehensive support, including medical care, justice, and all other necessities to restore their well-being.
Furthermore, participants were instructed on how to properly preserve evidence in cases of child abuse and were informed about the toll-free lines available for confidential reporting. Following a review of specific child abuse cases prevalent within the Mubuga sector, the committees collaboratively developed a joint action plan, which will serve as the guiding framework for eradicating child abuse in the area.
The sector leadership expressed their profound satisfaction with the initiative. They commended REWU and World Vision for their continuous support in the child protection awareness campaign, for providing care to children with special challenges, and for their commitment to ensuring that justice is served for all victims of abuse.
