On May 12, 2026, workers at St. Simion Metals experienced moments of immense joy and gratitude as a truckload of new mattresses arrived at their site. Coordinated by the Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU) and the Company’s Management, this distribution is a direct reflection of the union’s core pillar of promoting “Decent living Conditions” for its members.

Real-time updates from the workers expressed deep appreciation for the initiative. As the delivery truck was being unloaded, messages of thanks poured in to REWU for the successful coordination of the distribution. The celebratory mood on the ground was perfectly captured by the workers cheering, “Oh wow! Sleep well, miner” (Ryama heza mucukuzi).

While the arrival of the mattresses brought happiness to the site, workers also noted a challenge: the initial delivery was not large enough to cover every employee at St. Simion Metals. In response, the workers have formally requested REWU to step in and do what it does best—advocate on their behalf so that the remaining miners can also receive their mattresses.

This event highlights REWU’s practical, on-the-ground commitment to its “Advocacy and Decent Job” programs. By actively listening to the feedback from the field and working to resolve shortages, REWU continues to demonstrate why it is trusted by thousands happy members. It is yet another step forward in the union’s ongoing vision to craft lasting solutions and build an ethical, inclusive mining sector where workers’ rights and well-being are always respected.
