Minister Urges Trade Unions to Promote Decent Work at CESTRAR Congress
Rwanda’s Minister of Public Service and Labour Amb. Christine Nkulikiyinka encouraged trade unions under CESTRAR to continue their important role in advocating for decent work for their members, emphasizing the goal of creating 1,250,000 new and decent jobs. These comments were made during the official launch of the 10th CESTRAR Congress on Friday, October 4th, 2024.
Representatives from 17 affiliated trade unions attended the congress, along with leaders of employee and employer organizations in Rwanda. They pledged their support to government strategies aimed at creating decent jobs and upholding labor laws.
During the congress, Mr. BIRABONEYE Africain, the Secretary General of CESTRAR, highlighted the significance of promoting social dialogue between employees and employers to enhance organizational productivity and prevent conflicts.
The event took place from August 4th to 5th, 2024, with various stakeholders and leaders from different unions participating in the discussions and elections for leadership positions within CESTRAR.
Also in attendance were the Mayor of Kigali, DEA of Gasabo District, Commissioner in NCHR Mrs. Muhongerwa Patricie, Eric M. Manzi, the Deputy Secretary General of ITUC (International trade unions Confederations), and various other stakeholders.
During the congress, leaders of CESTRAR were elected. Comrade BIRABONEYE Africain was re-elected as the Secretary General, while TWAGIRAYEZU Sylvie Kevine and MUSONI Jordi were elected as Deputy General Secretaries.
Comrade UWAMAHORO Annualite, Vice President of the REWU National Council, was elected as the Secretary of the women’s committee in CESTRAR.
The leadership of the Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU) also participated in this congress.
